Open Call for a City Studies Teaching Artist

Open Call for a _City Studies_ Teaching Artist

We’re seeking a teaching artist to design and implement a 10-hour in class project for high school students at Lyons Community School in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn about the path to graduation.

This project will be part of a 12th grade class and will explore and visually explain the path to graduation for English Language Learners (ELLs), and students with learning disabilities who are granted Individual Education Plans (IEPs). What exactly do these classifications mean? What are the requirements for graduation? What are the barriers? The group will collaborate to find out and create a project demystifying the convoluted process of graduating from high school. The class meets in March on Thursdays from 12:30 – 3:30.

CUP’s project-based curricula enable students to explore fundamental questions about how the city works through collaborative research and design. CUP teaching artists/designers work with CUP staff and project partners to develop course ideas, schedules, lesson plans, and to document the project. Teaching artists produce a designed final product in collaboration with the students and CUP. The teaching artist will be paid $1750, and there is a separate budget for materials and other project costs.

Applications must be received by Friday, December 6th at 5pm.

Instructions for all teaching artist applicants:

Please submit a cover letter, a resume, contact information for two references, and a work sample with up to five images of what you consider to be your strongest visual work (not your students’ work). Send materials via email to apply@welcometocup.org

Please send all material as a single PDF. For audio or video work samples, please provide a link. Please use “[YourLastName_YourFirstName] Teaching Artist_City Studies” as your email subject line.

No calls please.

Please address the following in your cover letter:

Why are you interested in the topic?

What art and design media are you comfortable working in?

What experience do you have working with high school students, and why do you want to work with high school students?

CUP is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages people of color, women, LGBTQ, and disabled candidates to apply.
